Iraqi Nat’l Quran Memorization Competition: Winners Awarded
The ‘National Quran Memorization Teaching Plan’ competition was organized in Najaf by the Dar-ol-Quran Center of the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine in cooperation with the Dar-ol-Quan Center of the Astan of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine.
Representatives of 12 governorates of Iraq, including Najaf, Karbala, Kirkuk, Baghdad, Wasit, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Babil and Basra took part in the Quranic event, according to Karrar al-Shamari, who is in charge of the media department of the Dar-ol-Quran Center of the Astan of Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine.
He said the contest was held for three days at the mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf, with the contenders competing in the preliminary and final rounds.
He noted that they competed in four categories in two separate sections for men and women.
In the category of memorization of the entire Quran, Hussein Abdul Ridha from Basra was the top winner in the men section and Layli Mohammed Ali from Basra came firs in the women section, he stated.
Al-Shamari added that Ridha Tali Nassir from Wasit and Maryam Tahir Ibrahim from Basra won the second category, namely memorization of 20 Juzes (parts) of the Quran, in the men and women sections, respectively.
In memorization of 10 Juses of the Quran, Sajjad Muzhar Qassem and Zaynab Hassan Abd Abbas, both from Basra, bagged the top prize, he said.
Al-Shammari went on to say that the top winners in the fourth category, namely memorization of three Juzes of the Quran, were Mohammad Rafid Kadhim from Basra and Zaynab Haitham Awdah from Baghdad.
Quranic activities have significantly developed in Iraq since the 2003 overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein.
There has been a growing trend of Quranic programs such as competitions, recitation sessions and educational programs held in the country in recent years.
